We took our kids to see their future home.
Our goals were to familiarize ourselves with our future home and allow our kids to be a part of it. Until now, they have been more of bystanders than actual contributors.
We spent some time and money to make this happen. It was worth every second and every penny. Here are highlights.
- We made it a vacation. Stayed in hotels, ate at restaurants, and made time for some fun.
- We had one networking meeting with a couple in Fort Collins who made themselves instant family. They respected our time, loved our kids (well), and established themselves as supporters. Our short interaction made a huge impact. So thankful.
- We bought some CO merch. The spent some money to allow our kids to buy a hat or shirt with the CO logo on it. Did they need new clothes, not really. Do they need some connection to CO, yes, yes they do.
- We went on a muddy hike. While driving around, we stopped at a really beautiful lake and decided to hike a little. The views were great but the kids will take some to forget about the mud and bugs.
- We had some issues with our vehicle. I got to know 2 of the local auto part stores since the van had some minor issues. I think we are all set now but that become a memory in itself.
- We feel like in-laws and that's ok.
Driving around, it didn't feel like home.
It feels like the first time you go to thanksgiving at someone else's home.
You are part of what is happening. You are welcome to be there.
The role of a new in-law at their first family gathering is to listen and learn.
To be interested and not worry about being interesting.
In Arvada, CO, we have a long journey ahead of listening, learning, and then, one day, calling it home.
